Is Michael Beasley best friends with Adrian Peterson? If not, he should be because it looks like the two of them share the common bound of driving their cars at extreme speeds meant for illegal street races. Also, considering the two are in professional sports that are gonna be locked out, the both of them should head off to Hollywood and star in the next installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise.
When word came out Michael Beasley got arrested for speeding and the possession of marijuana, I wasn’t angry or shocked. I was simply disappointed. While I was proud he played the old “the weed was my friends” card, so he won’t be in too much of a sticky (pun intended) situation; stemming (pun intended) his arrest the Timberwolves, as well as Timberwolves fans, have much more to be worried about other than his jail time.
You see Michael Beasley is like Sid Vicious of the punk rock band, the Sex Pistols. Behind the back vocals of singer Vicious, the Sex Pistols only put out one studio album. It was called “Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols.” That being said, it was great. The album single handedly revolutionized punk rock music. In the UK it flipped the political unrest at the time on its heads with songs like “God Save The Queen” and “Anarchy in the UK.” Many thought Vicious and the Sex Pistols were the band of the future. Many thought Vicious and the Sex Pistols would be the catalyst that brought to the US, The British Invasion 2.0: Punk Rock Edition. Unfortunately drug abuse and other off the stage issues cut the band short. And the untimely dead of Vicious finished the band all together.
Now what in the world does Michael Beasley, a talented young basketball player “that smoked a little too much pot” and is having trouble getting rid of his harmful inner city past, have to do with a heroin addicted rock and roll legend that succumbed to his demons? A whole of a hell lot.
Michael Beasley’s freshman year at Kansas State is his “Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols.” Through his outstanding freshman year, many thought he would flip the NBA world on its head. The combination of his size and athleticism was something we had never seen. A 3 that plays like a 4 inside, and a 2 on the perimeter. His success in college made our mouths drool in excitement. Unfortunately, much like Vicious, his success derailed his progress. Like Sex Pistols fans once hoped Vicious had another “Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols” in him, Timberwolves fans hope Beasley has a season in the NBA like he had in his freshman year of college in him. What T-Wolves fans worry about with Beasley is what Sex Pistol fans worried about with Vicious: Will he be able to put his personal demons behind him and put out his talents in the same out of this world fashion he has in the past? Will we ever see the same greatness out of him like we did in the past? Or will he continually fall and submit to his demons?
And it is because of those question marks that should have the Timberwolves worried. It also because of those question marks why I wasn’t shocked or angry. Just simply disappointed. I hoped Beasley had put his personal demons behind him. I thought last year was a hint that this up coming year, would be the year everyone thought he would have coming out of college. But I was wrong. Beasley succumbed to his demons. To fans like myself, on the outside it looked like Beasley had changed. It seemed like moving to a smaller market would change Beasley for the better. And all of last year, that is what it looked like. But I was wrong. All I had was hope. Even so, I was always hesitant towards whole heartily admitting Beasley had changed for the better. In the back of my head I knew there was the possibility that Beasley hadn’t changed at all. And that is why I am not angry or shocked. Just simply disappointed.
On the inside, Beasley still has his harmful temptations to deal with it. And that is what the Timberwolves, as well as Timberwolves fans, have to be worried about. That being said, as a small market team we don’t have the luxury to kick someone as talented as Beasley to the curb like larger market team’s can. Thus, as a small market team it is our job to help Beasley and support him through his trials and tribulations. In a weird way Beasley is our own little Sid Vicious. That being said, at least he is not as messed as him. And that is coming from a Sex Pistol fan.
